What Goes into a Design Presentation

In an effort to try our hand at some new video content, we shared a behind the scenes look of prep work for presentation day. From organizing all our samples to reviewing every printed material, so much preparation goes into that important client meeting. Since posting, we found the video sparked some interest in our rhythms and routines as interior designers, so today, we’re taking it one step further. We’re walking through the process that proceeds a design presentation, including the concepts we use to best communicate our ideas. Whether you’re a prospective client or simply curious about the nature of our studio, we hope you’ll find some inspiration along the way.

Once we’ve connected with a new client at Yond Interiors, our attention shifts to Phase II of our design process: the presentation. As the guiding blueprint for the entire project, our presentations are very specific and thorough, with no detail left untouched. Prior to the presentation, we always create a series of shared Pinterest boards to collaborate with our clients visually. We love using Pinterest because you can start “secret” boards (boards not accessible to the public) so that the communication and client collaboration is kept private. We add comments on each pin to help identify specific elements our team or our clients love within the image. Whether it’s the color palette, a particular furniture piece, or just an overall mood, we can use comments to help narrow down the style elements we are aiming to achieve with any given project.

Another essential element of presentation preparation is providing renderings, exact specifications, a detailed budget, and samples. All of these details are discussed alongside our design concepts, which offer our clients a full picture of everything their project entails. We’ve included some recent concept materials and sketches to give you an idea of what our clients review during their presentation.

As we put together a presentation, the goal is always for us to design each space to completion. At this point in the process, our clients are able to officially sign-on and/or request revisions as needed. Luckily, we’ve found that the steps we take during early stages of our client process typically eliminate the need for many revisions. If there are adjustments, we like to represent those spaces to ensure that the design integrity has been preserved before moving forward.

Presentation day is one of the biggest milestones throughout a project. While it requires a significant time investment to finalize each detail, there’s no better payoff than sharing well-designed plans for the spaces our clients call home.
