The Elements of a Well-Designed Mudroom

Here in Minneapolis, we’re beginning to see the very first signs of spring as our city inches its way towards warmer days ahead. Of course, with that seasonal transition comes plenty of snowy slush, making a mudroom the real MVP of every home. Contrary to popular belief, we don’t consider mudroom design an afterthought, and we aim to bring that same Yond Interiors level of intention to every detail. Take a look through our recent work, and you’ll notice our approach is all about selecting hard-working materials that are just as functional as they are beautiful.

As we step into a new season, we’re outlining the anatomy of a well-designed mudroom and highlighting some project examples in the process. We’ll share the must-have elements, how to integrate adequate storage, and where to shop our favorite pieces.

Mudroom Design: Flooring

Whether it’s for a cold-climate home like the River Road Remodel, or a California property like our project Alisal Ave, mudroom flooring is our first consideration. When possible, we will always opt for natural materials. As we hone in on a material, we talk to our clients about their use, needs, durability, and the climate. Lately, we have been specifying quite a bit of limestone, marble, and slate for our mudroom projects. All three of these are hard-working materials that will stand up to muddy boots, show minimal signs of wear, and wipe up in a flash.

Mudroom Design: Built-ins

For our recent project at Yond Interiors, we’ve been opting for more built-in storage options versus the typical coat closet. We find that built-ins allow us to maximize and customize storage for every space. Most of our clients have very specific mudroom needs, so knowing those upfront helps us deliver as much function as possible. Another reason we love built-ins? They are a great way to incorporate fun cabinetry design, paint color, and wood tone.

Mudroom Design: Hooks + Storage

Our team has found that most clients like to have a mix of open and closed storage options. To accommodate, we plan for open hooks and bench space accordingly, along with the built-ins. When we’re working on a home here in Minnesota, most families have a robust collection of coats, boots, hats—you name it. Having a space to store all the winter weather gear properly makes such a world of difference.

Mudroom Design: Laundry

As seen in both our Broadway Court and Alisal Ave projects, many mudroom spaces are integrated with full laundry appliances. It can be tricky to incorporate laundry when a mudroom footprint is small, but with careful planning and clever workarounds, we can likely make it happen.

While we’re discussing the ins and outs of mudroom design, we wanted to share what you can expect from our Yond Cottage project that’s currently in the works. After considering the current footprint, we decided to add an addition to the home to accommodate a proper mudroom for our family and our guests. Given the four-season nature of the property set on Lake Superior, we wanted to ensure that everything has a spot—from snow boots to water shoes and everything in between. As of now, we’re thinking limestone floors, warm, saturated paint, and some wallpaper to tie it all together.
