5 Reasons to Hire an Interior Designer

Over the past few months, our content has really dug into the process and nuances of design. We’ve shared how we approach specific spaces, why we gravitate towards custom furnishings, and where we use bold color while still providing balance. Today, however, we’re going back to the basics of why to hire an interior designer in the first place.

Those outside our industry might assume interior designers exclusively handle aesthetic elements like decorating or styling. But, the real bread and butter of our work as a full-service design studio involves project management, organizational systems, and client advocacy. We provide comprehensive project oversight, and fluffing pillows? Well, that’s about 1% of the actual job.

Read on for a closer glimpse inside our work and the lesser-known components of interior design.

Why to Hire an Interior Designer?

Designers Specialize in Project Management

Managing a construction project is not for the faint of heart and requires overseeing an intense amount of moving parts. As experienced designers, it’s our job to protect the design intent of a project and communicate the details we’ve designed (alongside the client!) to the build team.

Our clients are often busy families who want a beautifully-designed home but lack the time or expertise to take on this complex role. Instead, they allow our team to lead the project management. Here's a look at what that entails:

  • Create detailed specification books for all items specified and approved for the contractor and subs

  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly site visits and/or check-in calls

  • Manage procurement and deliveries, plus resolve any issues that arise (which are plentiful in a time of supply-chain disruptions)

  • Provide quality control checks on all design elements

Designers Provide a Keen Attention to Detail

If you've ever played a game of telephone, you know how easy it is for information to get lost in translation. That's exactly what can happen during the course of home renovation. The beauty of full-service design is that we're able to walk with our clients through the duration of the project, ensuring no detail is overlooked, and every plan is clearly communicated with thorough drawing sets and specification books for reference. We also think of your project as whole, which means we're constantly thinking about the interaction between your spaces.

Designers Act as Quality Control

When you’re specifying investment pieces for a home, it’s not something to take lightly. The reality is that damages and mistakes will happen in the delivery process, but it’s a designer’s role to spearhead finding the solution. At Yond Interiors, we require that any item that is specified by us is either purchased by us or the contractor/sub. We do this for many reasons, but the primary one is keeping a tight rein on the process and troubleshooting any issues that arise. We also manage deliveries and provide quality control. Just this week, our team had two sets of sconces delivered in the wrong finish. While that could easily hold up a project, it takes our solid relationships with vendors to get the issue solved quickly.

Designers Offer Key Connections

Partnering with local artisans is one of our core values as a design studio. We’ll always champion custom handmade goods over fashion home fashion and give our clients pieces built to last a lifetime. We’ve cultivated relationships both locally and nationally with amazing craftspeople, creators, and vendors to ensure our clients have access to the best pool of talent. We are happy to provide that industry knowledge and design spaces filled with future heirlooms.

Designers Advocate For Their Clients

Anyone who has gone through the process of renovation or building knows there are always points in the project where you hit a wall. Whether it's a supply shortage or communication mishap, hiccups are inevitable and can make the process incredibly stressful. At our studio, we see ourselves as fierce advocates for our clients and will go to bat for them throughout the entire process. We want our clients to really enjoy designing their home and are happy to work tirelessly on their behalf.
