An Interview With Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture

Partnering with local artisans is one of our core values as a design studio. We’ll always champion custom handmade goods over fashion home fashion and give our clients pieces built to last a lifetime. Here in Minneapolis, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by a vast community of craftspeople, including Andy Weld of Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture. Like all good things in life, a friend recommended Andy to us, and we’re so thankful for the relationship we’ve cultivated.

Rovan Furniture has been a constant presence in our work—from the dining table in Paisley Lane and River Road to multiple pieces in Broadway Court and Sheridan Ave. We love that our custom furniture allows us to participate in the design process. No matter where a project takes us, it’s a win-win to support a Minneapolis-based business and offer our clients handmade furniture of the highest quality. We hope that the pieces our clients invest in will become heirlooms—something to be passed down from generation to generation. We love nothing more than dreaming up our own designs and having a willing and ready partner to bring it to life.

We caught a few minutes with Andy to learn more about his background in furniture design and revisit some of our favorite collaborations from over the years.

Will you share how Rovan first began as a business?

Rovan was actually a custom drum company that existed in my parents' garage in Iowa before it was a furniture company. This is ultimately where it all began in terms of woodworking and building things with my hands. From there, I absorbed woodworking knowledge for years, working my first job out of high school at a furniture restoration shop in St. Paul. I would repair broken chairs that would arrive in plastic grocery bags and family heirloom dining tables.

I later moved to Denver to study Fine Woodworking and Furniture Design for a couple of years and returned to the Twin Cities in 2013 to launch Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture. Since then, we've been fortunate to make tons of rewarding and challenging furniture pieces. Every custom piece is made possible by our employees and close network of craftsmen. You can find our furniture at your favorite watering holes, commercial lobbies, and inside your neighbor's home. We're honored to be celebrating ten years of business in 2023!

You do a lot of collaborations with designers (like us!), we'd love to hear your perspective on creating custom pieces.

I can remember way back to the very first custom piece we did together. We met at our old 500-square-foot woodshop in St. Paul and hovered over a crude sketch of a dining table with dowel legs and a "groovy" routed profile. I’ve got fond memories of that build and all of our collab pieces since then!

Collaborating with designers of all styles is ultimately what keeps every day in the woodshop exciting and challenging. And the fact that we *almost* never build the same thing twice. Whether it’s a designer looking for some custom pieces to include the largest solid wood dowels we've ever made, a 120-foot-long exotic wood bar top, a small side table with loads of exposed joinery, or a massive credenza with an ocean blue finish, we here to say YES and bring it to life. All while offering our expertise on buildability and design.

We are custom furniture builders, after all.
